Did you know online and distance learning programs have been around for over a century?
Many think online and distance learning programs are a new educational method. Some even believe they were created around the time of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019 to help students continue their education during quarantines and city-wide lockdown. However they have been around much longer.
One example is The Harvard Extension School (HES), one of the 12 degree-granting schools at the renowned, Harvard University. HES has offered online education since the 1980s and distance learning since 1910, to students from over 120 countries.
Today, HES has over 13,000 students and 25 degree programs. Their students come from multiple time zones and various cultural and professional backgrounds.
Harvard University is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. It was founded in 1636 as Harvard College in Massachusetts. It is one of the United States’ “Ivy Leagues” — a group of long-established colleges and universities in the eastern United States that are known for their high academic and social prestige.
Harvard Extension School is a great example of how rewarding and efficient online learning can be for students, educators, and institutions.
